Just bought my first car today. 2002 Toyota Corolla Ascent Sedan, auto, 55000km on the clock, for $14888. Single owner as well.

In terms of price, it's the best deal I could hope to get. When I insured it, the RAA put down the market price of the car as $17,100.

Basically, we spent Thursday educating ourselves. At the end of the day, I drove home a white Corolla Ascent Seca hatchback, 2003 with 90000km on the clock. I'd talked them down from $16,990 (plus stamp duty etc), to $16,300 on road. i.e. down $1200, and they let me have it for an extended test drive so I could get my mum's opinion. The kilometers showed, and my mum wasn't going to lend me money for it, but driving it home let me finally decide I wanted a Corolla.

I'd also tried a 2003 Lancer that day, with 40000km on it, and a mate who was a salesman there was able to offer me $15000 on road for it.

Essentially, I was about ready to give up on a Corolla, because anything 2002+, with anything resembling decent mileage, was between $17000 and $20000, which was a bit much for me.

Then we went home, and saw this in the paper from that morning. Drove out first thing Friday morning, looked at another 2003 hatch with 60000km on it, for $16990, but it had been an ex-rental car and smelled of stale cigarettes. Went to the place with my car, and it was still there. Test drove it, and decided to buy it. NO WAY was I ever going to get that year and that mileage for that price again. The prices are just jumping as everyone wants a Corolla for their economy and reliability, now that petrol's going up.

While we were signing stuff, a guy who'd test driven it twice yesterday, and gone home to sleep on it was trying to ring up to say he'd be in later to buy it.

Anyway, I'm thrilled with it. I can't wipe the grin off my face.

I make a new vow, one weighed in experience and proclaimed with my eyes open: I will not raise my scimitars except in defense: in defense of my principles, of my life, or of others who cannot defend themselves. I will not do battle to further the causes of false prophets, to further the treasures of kings, or to avenge my own injured pride.

Enjoy your new car and drive it in good health!

As we say here in Greece " KáëïôÜîéäï!"

It is not enough to conquer;
one must learn to seduce.
