Five years ago, on March 16 of 2002, I came home from work and checked Dragonsworn for new posts. I had just recently joined the board and I was hooked. I was at the time involved in a heated debate over some thing or other. To my surprise I found a private message waiting for me... and that's how it ALL started.

(I know Dalthor thinks it's unfair he has to remember three anniversaries. They day we first started talking, the day we actually met in person, six months later, and of course, the day we got married. Trust me, it could be worse.)

Most people, normal people, meet the love of their lives at normal places; a bar, a restaurant, a doctor's office, a street corner, a park... someplace real. From then on that place becomes special to them and always brings back fond memories. If for some reason this place changes or gets damaged or destroyed, then it generates all sorts of sad feelings to those people.

It was my luck to find my mate at this Internet Board. Back then it was thriving. Now? It's dead, or dying. That's the way of things I guess. It's not something I enjoy seeing, but I don't think I can do much about it. I'll stick around for as long as I can, even if I just post silly things like this. Dragonsworn is still special to me and I'll always remember it fondly.

So.. thanks for the memories, I guess.
Maria

Well, a belated Happy meeting-anniversary day.

I apologize that I'm not around more. You're right, Dragonsworn used to be much more than it is now. Content drives visitors, and visitors drive content... and we've not neither, currently. For several months when we did have some reasonably recent content, dating back to 2002-2003, the site wasn't up consistently, and that was my fault.

How we got to where we are was a long road. RJ slowed down his writing considerably, the staff lost alot of time, we had spotty connectivity which meant the site wasn't always available, etc, etc, etc. Even now, we're back to spotty connectivity for the time being, even if it has been mostly up - it's been slow.

For about 2, maybe 3 years things were golden from a connectivity standpoint, but by then everything was mostly dead and we didn't see alot of traffic. More than we see now, that's for sure.

But I think the one of the primary reasons we are as dead as we are is because Dragonsworn has always been single threaded on a role - the role of Director. When you get right down to it, you can't have more than one Director, you need a firm hand at the tiller. Dragonsworn's always been Ish's baby, and I don't begrudge him that at all. He went idle for a few years, I kind of stepped in to keep things going, but we were never what we were when Ish was at the tiller. When Ish came back, we handed things back over, and he got even more done than I had ever done. We've got this forum software to thank him for, for instance.

Sure, I worked on DGNv2, but I never delivered any of it, I'm sorry to say. I've still got all the code, and there were times I worked really hard on it, but due to a combination of things I've always been missing either the time or the inclination to put all the work into it that needs to go into it.

Could Dragonsworn make a big comeback? Sure. But a large part of what made Dragonsworn, Dragonsworn was the community - and not just the online community either. I think the old IRC room was more the foundation of the Dragonsworn of old than anything else. I have to admit I haven't even signed onto the Undernet in at least a year.

I dunno, I've gone in other directions than I really intended here, and what I intended to say was that I'm sorry I wasn't able to deliver more, when I should have. I will continue to keep the site operational, and, hey - I may even get off my lazy ass and do some work one of these days.

I know what you mean about the sleep and work grind. I am even stupid enough to work practically full time and then take night classes.

Man, I do miss all of the good times around here though.

Another year rolled by. DalThor and I have been together for six years now, married for the past two and a half.

This board is dead. But I keep checking. It holds a special place in my heart. It all started here for me. Thanks for the memories. Again.

I actually still use the password dsworn gave me upon account activation, and it has entered my regular rotation.

It is funny the things that change and grow over time, and kinda sad the things that wither and fall by the wayside.

If I remember correctly I was 15 when I found this place. I will be 23 in August. I am sure that it was quite obvious to some how old I was and that I was still maturing but I was treated like an equal. This place became a home to me.

I have yet to fit in with another community as well as I did this one and I don't think I will ever be able to replace it. But, alas, time moves on and waits for no one. I will still check in from time to time to see who is floating around.

Try not to check Inspiration, cause it makes me feel bad. We always had highs, and lows. The highs were ambitious, and the lows were long. Once I lost, interest that was it. Never expected the message boards to take off, it was the main website - which aside from myself, was pretty much dead for content.

A project like this is meant to be self propagating, and we never set it up that way.

I feel like shit that you guys still come here, and remember stuff, and it's just... run down.

Anyways, post in announcements. Have the resources to start something, something new - but the same. Think, given the last 3 / 4 times, it's important that i'm not the only one involved. Obviously the people in this thread have some, lingering dedication.

So let's figure something out, let's build a website, that part is easy. We can have a solid software package, good connection (RT!), make it look good - but eventually i'll just disappear, and we need to find away to have a staff to mantain it.

Before things ended last time, we had a full beta for dragonsworn, with you know, comments/reviews/thread integration. RT might still have it.

Let's start something up - it can't just be me. Obviously you guys are invested in this, at least a little bit.

So let's make a deal. We'll get together, figure some shit out. I'll build a site, that will probably have angels or maybe something new, but fully functional - comments, whatever we need, basically will give you a good start. Will build an admin interface, and Ryan will always have total control. There'll be some money to build traffic, what have you. I'll write my random reviews for awhile, will get content.

And then will douche out, as I inevitably do, and it'll be up to you guys to build content/keep shit alive.

You've been here long enough, it should really be yours. So i'll get you started.

*** When i leave, you must still refer to me as 'God-Emperor'

So, whoever's up for another one of our activity spikes, great. Keep it going this time.

I'm in after July 1st, reply / email me at shamirnandy@gmail.com if this isn't the worst idea ever.

Ish

I'm actually cool with it now. The apostrophe was my mistake in the first place. I wouldn't want it back anyway.

Aginor is still here, still around Mashiara... it does break a mad genius's heart that a place which long revered his personal witticisms and eccentricities has come to such a passing.

Aginor also has fond memories of the great times when Dragonsworn was one of the reasons for logging on betwixt the twilight hours.

Aginor misses the insessant needling of the mortal worms and their pitiful existences. He yearns for the days when Shai'Tahn Dark was on Tap and the Deathmatch Ring was full of blood and semi-removed organs.

*Betsy whines in a sad fashion*

Even Betsy misses the taste of forumers flesh. Alas, it must have partially been Aginor's fault. Aginor had a hand in the decline by refusing to participate in unfashionably pedestrian dialogue of the peasantry.

It does warm a Rotten Soul that your fond memories are shared here in this hallowed place.

So Aginor shall drink a few STD's for you, in remembrance of better times.

Lord Aginor! I did not expect to see you again. To think of all the times I lost my cool trying to argue with you. Actually, it was an argument with you and.. someone else whose name I can't remember that led to dalThor first contacting me. In a way, you are the one who got this started for us

Here's to drinking and remembering.

I remember some truly inspired LA posts. Before LA wimped out and started listening to the acoustic crap.

I wouldn't mind getting back into a heavy posting scheme of things again, but I'm not sure there is enough mystery left in wot to do it based on this content. Really, it seems like the boards were most active when we were in books 3,4,5. There was a lot of prophecy to argue about and people had a lot of story to care about (literary arc was opening up instead of closing down). To me, one of the interesting things this forum did was be one of three primary discussion communities that was trying to understand a world that had rules and form that was unseen but would come to be known. We could win or lose by predicting, arguing for, and eventually validating those predictions of events in the upcoming books. I don't know another narrative at that book 3,4,5 point.

I think we would have to expand the base to another series or topical focus. Its tough to catch that wave again because its hard to find a series that hasn't already got a strong (and usually publisher/author engaged) web community or a broad enough narrative and cogent enough rules to create those predictions of the future.

From arguing with my Greco friend, I know that there is a little passion left around here if we find or create something evocative enough to spark it.

Because of your comment, I got to thinking... I've been involved with Dragonsworn for... something like 12 years now. Wow. I've been powering the site for... wow... at least 7, maybe 8 years? I think I started hosting it back in 2001, maybe 2002... but I don't even remember any more. Hrrm, no... putting the timeline together, it's been even longer than that. I'd say it's been at least 8 years, possibly more. I probably started hosting in late 1999 / early 2000. Hrrm, possibly even before then, now that I'm thinking even further back. So many different servers over the years, they're all blurring together. I started hanging out in IRC back... oh, late 1996, early 1997, I believe. Back when we still had big debates on IRC, and we were all about WoT, and hang any other series. Man, those were the days. Yeah, probably 1999 / 2000, it was 2-3 years after I was around that I started hosting.

Anyways, I'm still alive, even if I don't always show it.
