Howdy,
As you are all aware, I never have enough time on my hands... so I thought, why not waste more of it? I've been playing EVE Online since November of 2007 now, on and off. What's really cool about this is... I'm not penalized for on and off play. :)
Everyone knows what an MMO is nowadays, and EVE Online is definitely an MMO. However, it differs greatly from other, more traditional MMOs. Here's how:
- Game Technology
I can't say enough about this one. Take WoW for instance. Your average server population is something like 6-10k characters, and the most ever online at a time is somewhere around 2k characters. Or so I've been told. I played WoW for like, 3 months one time. Kind of. But Linthos concurs (and it should be noted that Linthos is the guildmaster of one of the top guilds on his server) that those numbers seem right. Anyways, to scale the game, Blizzard puts up new servers. Given their customer base nowadays, I have to imagine they've got at least 100 different servers up... although... hrrm. Anyways...
EVE Online has 1 server. Comprised of multiple machines (just as WoW servers are), this one big server hosts all EVE players. There's something like 200-300k players at the moment. The most I've ever seen online at once was in the 40k range. Typically it's in the 23k - 28k range.
What does this mean? Obviously, overall, EVE has fewer players - but damn! I get to play with all of them! None of this 'Well, I play on Senjin!' 'But you should play on Fusufeh-Depobaw!' bullshit. You play EVE, you play with me.
- The Market
So, in your traditional MMOs, you can visit some NPCs and buy some crap gear, or you can pick up some loot from your mobs, or there's some form of marketplace you can visit.
In EVE... everything is on the marketplace. But it goes deeper than that. Some NPC corporations will seed certain objects - Civilian issue equipment, skillbooks, blueprints, etc. Everything else comes from players. Almost every piece of gear in the game can be sold on the market, and EVERYTHING can be sold through the contracts system. All the standard gear can be built from blueprints, variations on the standard gear exist in the form of faction gear, deadspace gear, and named gear. All gear can be refined down to it's base minerals, if you want the minerals.
All the minerals to build everything comes from the system as well... you mine the ore, refine it into minerals, and then can build stuff out of it.
Of course, you don't have to do it all. Whatever place you want to take in the universe, you can - be it miner, refiner, industrialist, mission runner, bounty hunter, pirate killer, pirate, suicide ganker, ninja looter, thief, whatever.
Basically, EVE is one giant universe, with a bunch of tools. You can do whatever you want to with the tools. You can build structures, even stations. You can conquor regions, and gain sovereignty.
Oh, and maybe I haven't mentioned yet... but it's in SPACE.
As in... you're a capsuleer, a pod pilot, whatever. You get to fly around in space ships, in a giant universe consisting of something like 40+ regions of space, which consist of multiple constellations, comprising of 3-7 star systems each.
I dunno. It's late, I'm tired, I'm not thinking straight... but I wanted to start to share the awesomeness that is EVE Online with you all - all 4 of you who still read this board. ;)
I'll edit this over the coming days, or respond to it, or something, to provide additional details, etc.
-Ryan

MMO's are too dangerous for me. I have an addictive personsality, and like collecting things. I'm afraid I can't risk one.

I couldn't agree more... but it just looks so damn cool. Maybe just a little taste...

I started playing in May of this year. I love it. Ryan, if you're still playing you should let me know. Unfortunately I won't be playing too much the next month or two, just logging in to set some skills. After that, however, I expect to be on regularly.

Was even in the militia for a time. I like the rugged look/feel of the ships.
