Hey Everyone-
I'd like to invite you all (well, all non-staff) to... 'Ask Ryan'. Have a question about any of the technical / backend stuff with Dragonsworn? Whats going on with our servers? When will we see such and such? Will this have that feature? Go ahead - ask. I'll do my best to answer in a timely fashion.

Please note that questions from staff will be disregarded. :-P Just cuz I can.

I'm sure you do. Staff knows how to get ahold of me using our various communication methods (email, staff area, telephone). I thought I'd give a chance for our users to try and pick my brain, and not spoon-feed them what either I or other staff people think that they might want to know. So its part lazy (if a question doesn't come up, I don't have to answer it) and part curious (what exactly do our users want to know, if anything?)

are we going to get aviaters?

what about the spell check button, is that going to be brought back? That would be a big help.

When is the next inspiration meeting? can none staff memebers attend?

What about email accounts. Are we going to get email accounts again.

besides donating money and getting more people to post, how can someone with limited time help out. Because i know i would love to do a review but i just don't see when i can get it done. Does reviews need to be done at what immediatly? what i mean is can i right a review about a old book that no one has done a review on?

My Lord Emperor,

I'll field your non technical questions. First, about reviews. From the 'Help Wanted' Forum

quote:
'Books can be of any age, but must fit strictly into the genres of fantasy, sci-fi, or horror. Games and Movies should be relatively newer titles, and can cover a broad

We want to build up a review archive, so older books are just fine.

Secondly, concerning staff meetings. Our meetings are generally open, so anyone can attend. We haven't scheduled one in the near future, but once we do, we'll post it here.

About helping out, aside from reviews and all. It always helps to come up with ideas about increasing our general traffic, or getting other sites to link to us. In addition, divination can always use more sites. It doesn't have to be a lot, just submitting a couple every few days helps us out tons. Also, if you buy anything from amazon, take one of our review links to get over there.

If you or anyone else has any questions, don't hesitate to email me snandy@dragonsworn.com , or visit #dragonsworn on irc.chatmatrix.net. I get PM's to rarely to answer them in a timely manner. If you're interested in helping out on the technical side, then it's best to talk to Ryan.

Thanks for your interest, O Rodent King!

Fishy

If you mean aviators, then no, as I cannot afford personal pilots for all of you. Avatars, however, will be a part of the 2.0 system, yes.

2.0 will have spell check functionality, but possibly not at first. It is scheduled for implementation, probably using ispell or aspell.

Whenever Ish next gets a hair up his ass. *laugh* Sorry, just had to. I dunno. When we decide to do a meeting, we get anywhere from 30 minutes notice to a month. Unless its a closed meeting (which are very very very rare), they get posted about over here.

Webmail will be reenabled at some point in time in the future.

Reviews are always fair game, and older books are great too - although we are trying to stick to our 'core' areas of Fant/SciFi/Hor.

I was actually going to ask a question about 2.0.

Basically, what is it, and why do we need it? From what I can see, we've asked for small things like avatars, spell check, and perhaps one or two other items. Can't the current forum software just be updated, or switch to one of the more popular ones out there?

Out of curiousity, I checked out the archives in the suggestions area, and there's a topic posted by Ryan asking for BETA testing for 2.0, back on January 10th, 2002.

2 years seems an awfully long time for minor forum changes. You say you're creating a new one from the ground up, I can't help but ask why. If it's taken you two years to beta test, then I have to say, as a user of this board for several years, perhaps it's not the best way for us to go.

Even if Dragonsworn is committed to a 2.0 that's great, but does that automatically exlcude an updgrade to our current package? In the last 2+ years one must have come out, or if that's not the case, all major board systems can import each other's content, correct?

All I'm saying is that for years you guys have been asking for suggestions, and they never get implemented. Why ask if you don't care? If you do care, then don't ask until you can do something about it. I don't know how many times people have asked for avatars, but nothing changes. Back when I first joined, suggestions were considered very quickly. I remember having the quote window below was something the users wanted, and you guys quickly gave it to us.

If you're going to answer all your questions with '2.0', then there's not much point in asking, is there?

And perhaps a little more detail on the webmail question. 'Webmail will be reenabled at some point in time in the future' implies that it's deactivated now. Meaning we'll still have our old login/passwords and saved messages when it's reenabled. Is that a correct assumption?

I'm not trying to be rude, but for well over two years you've been asking for suggestions, and then not doing anything about them when we make some. If that's how it's going to be, then at least don't ask for them, and I won't be whining your indifference!
